Financial Literacy League
Pioneer West Virginia Federal Credit Union is committed to offering safer financial alternatives to our youth. We will accommodate the school systems, which founded this not-for-profit financial cooperative, with excellent financial products and services, while encouraging long-term saving, responsible credit use and wise financial decision-making.
The Financial Literacy League (FLL) is an organization created solely to meet the financial needs of high school seniors in Kanawha County, students in grades 9-12 at Charleston Catholic High School and students in grades 9-12 in Roane, Clay, Fayette and Greenbrier Counties.
Membership
To become a member of the FLL, one must open an account, with a minimum deposit of $5.00, at WVSEFCU. The credit union will deposit the first $5.00 into the account. Once an individual becomes a member, he or she is part of the credit union's democratic process. Every member, no matter what age, has an equal voting right to elect the credit union's volunteer board of directors.
FLL Leader
The credit union will select an eligible student from each participating high school to become a Financial Literacy League Leader. Students will be selected based on recommendations from a school administrator, interest in the program and an interview with credit union personnel. Leaders will have the potential of receiving a scholarship from $500.00-$1,000,00.00, depending on performance. Students will also receive hourly pay.
FLL Leader Responsibilities
Leaders will be required to learn about the credit union movement, credit union products and services and be willing to discuss them with potential members. Leaders must also be willing to participate in and help facilitate financial education meetings with their peers. The efforts of the Leaders will inform and educate new, responsible potential members for the credit union.
FLL Essay Scholarship Contest
Each member of the FLL is eligible to enter the essay scholarship contest. Members must submit a typed 250-500 word essay telling how a credit union has helped them or someone they know. The contest is open to any student pursuing an associate's degree, bachelor's degree, trade school education, etc. Students are eligible to earn up to $1,000.00 in scholarship money.
Program Materials
The credit union will use materials provided free of charge by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE).
Services Provided to Students
